From Old High German vergezzen, firgezzan, from Proto-Germanic *fragetaną. Compare Dutch vergeten and English forget.

Usage notes

  • In Austria, this verb may alternatively be construed with "auf" and a following accusative object; this usage is encompassed by the non-prepositional variant, but not the other way around. It is only possible with senses 2 and 3.
  • In older usage, this verb governed the genitive. This is now obsolete.
