From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German vertuon, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German fartuon (to fordo, waste, destroy), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *fardōną, *fradōną (to ruin, destroy), equivalent to ver- +‎ tun. Cognate with English fordo, Dutch verdoen.
