German

Etymology

From verwenden (to use, utilize).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /fɛɐ̯ˈvant/, /fɐ-/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -ant
  • Hyphenation: ver‧wandt

Adjective

verwandt (comparative verwandter, superlative am verwandtesten)

  1. related (connected by blood, adoption, or marriage)
Engländer und Deutsche sind sehr verwandt.
The English and Germans are very related.
    Hyponyms: anverwandt, blutsverwandt, stammverwandt, wurzelverwandt
  2. related (standing in relation or connection)
    Hyponyms: geistesverwandt, seelenverwandt

Usage notes

  • In a narrower sense verwandt includes relatives by blood and adoption, their spouses and one’s own spouse—but not other “in-laws”. The latter are then specified with the adjective verschwägert (related by marriage).
  • An even narrower sense is blutsverwandt (related by blood).
