Etymology[edit]

From viðtenging ‎(an annexation) derived from tengja við ‎(to connect to, to join) and háttur ‎(a mood) as a calque of the Latin modus coniunctivus since the subjunctive is frequently used when connecting a main clause with subordinate clauses.[1][2]
