Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From older viedzure, possibly from Albanian (Gheg) vjedhullë (compare standard vjedull), from vjedh ‘to steal’.[1][2] or alternatively cognate to it as a substratum term, from a proposed Dacian *viedula,[3] though this is uncertain. Conversely it may be that the Albanian term is derived from a local Vlach language or Proto-Romanian. May also be tied to a Slavic *jazvrŭ ‘hedgehog’.[4]
