vjeshtë
Albanian
Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *vestā, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₂st- (“empty, wasted”), with a sense development of 'to decay, wither' (of nature). Cognate with Old High German wuosti, wuasti (“a waste; > Modern German Wüste”). Others have compared it with Latin aestas (“summer”), Gothic 𐌰𐍃𐌰𐌽𐍃 (asans, “harvest time”) and Old English ast (“dried stove”). Pokorny makes a connection with the Latin goddess Vesta (and her Greek equivalent Εστία), which he considers of Illyrian origin.[1] Orel derives it from Proto-Albanian *wel-estā, derived from vjel (“to pluck, vintage”) (from Proto-Albanian *wela), cognate to Lithuanian suvalýti (“to harvest, reap”) and Ancient Greek εἴλω (eílō, “to shut in, press”).[2]
