[edit]Possibly from Latin vānitās (compare the neological borrowing vanitate), or alternatively derived from a now lost early Romanian verb *vânta, itself from the Vulgar Latin or Late Latin vānitāre (whence Italian vantare, French vanter), from Latin vānitās, from vānus.[1]
