From Proto-Germanic *wētaz. Cognate with Old Frisian wēt, Old Norse vátr; ultimately related to English water. Also akin to Old Armenian գետ (get, river). Compare Luwian [script needed] (wida-, wet) (Proto-Indo-European *wed-o-).
