Etymology[edit]
From Middle Low German wannêr, from Old Saxon hwanēr (“when”), probably a compound of Proto-West Germanic *hwan (“when”) and *airi (“earlier”).
Related to wann and wenn, Dutch wanneer and wen, High German wann and wenn, English when.
