  1. A piece of laboratory equipment consisting of a vessel containing water, in which is suspended a flask that is to be subject to careful heating or cooling.
  2. An analogous piece of equipment used in a kitchen (especially a commercial kitchen), to cook food or to keep it hot.
    Synonym: bain marie
