  1. (rare, UK, dialect) The yaffle or green woodpecker, Picus viridis.
    • May 19, 1886, W.B., “Shropshire Birds”, in Salopian Shreds and Patches, page 114:
      Mr. F.C. Birkbeck Terry quoting from the Rev. C. Swainson's “Folklore of British Birds” gives yockel as the local Salopian name for the green woodpecker. ¶ Can any readers of Salopian Shreds and Patches give instances of localities for these names?
