Conflation of Middle High German setzen (to set, place down) (from Proto-Germanic *satjaną) and sitzen (to sit) (from *sitjaną). setzen, a weak verb, contributes the infinitive, plural present indicative, and present subjunctive forms; sitzen, a strong verb, the rest.
