Coined by A. Kronvalds from zīme(sign, symbol) (q.v.) or zīmēt(to draw) ( +‎ -ulis) around 1870.[1]

  1. pencil (instrument made of graphite or lead, usually inside a wooden frame, used for writing or drawing)
