Coined by A. Kronvalds from zīme (sign, symbol) (q.v.) or zīmēt (to draw) ( +‎ -ulis) around 1870.[1]

  1. pencil (instrument made of graphite or lead, usually inside a wooden frame, used for writing or drawing)
    smails zīmulis — sharp pencil
    rakstīt ar zīmuli — to write with a pencil
    zīmuļa vilciens — a pencil stroke
    zīmuļu asināmaispencil sharpener
    asināt zīmuli — to sharpen a pencil
    krāsu, krāsainie zīmuļi — colored pencils, crayons
    ciets, mīksts zīmulis — hard, soft pencil (i.e., with lead wears out slowly, or quickly)
