Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German zart, from Old High German zart, from Proto-Germanic *tardaz (tender), from Proto-Indo-European *der- (to flay, split, cleave), whence English tear and dermal. Cognate with Middle Dutch taert (soft, weak, effeminate).
