From Vulgar Latin *sūfilāre, from Latin sībilāre, present active infinitive of sībilō, whence also the doublets sibilare and sobillare. Cognate with Corsican zifulà, Venetian sifołar, Romansch tschüvler, tschivlar, Norman sûfflier, Walloon xhufler (Old French sufler).
