Etymology[edit]
From Byzantine Greek ακουμβιστήριον (akoumbistḗrion), equivalent to ακουμπώ (akoumpó, “to touch”) + -τήρι (-tíri), following the example of similar tool nouns with that suffix such as σκαλιστήρι (skalistíri, “hoe”) and ποτιστήρι (potistíri, “watering”).
