Etymology

From Koine Greek ἐκστρατεία (ekstrateía, “military campaign, expedition”), akin to verb εκστρατεύω (ekstratévo) from prefix εκ- (ek-, “out, from”) +‎ στρατός (stratós, “army”), from Ancient Greek ἐκστρατεύω (ekstrateúō, “to march out; to take the field; wage a campaign”) from ἐκ- (ek-) +‎ στρᾰτεύω (strateúō, “to advance with an army, wage war”); in figurative sense, partially a semantic loan from French campagne.
