Etymology[edit]

A modern or mediaeval αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, repatriated loanword), inherited from Byzantine Greek μπουκάλιν (mpoukálin),[1] from Venetian bocal[2] -Italian boccale (jug, bottle), or otherwise from Sicilian buccali (jug, bottle)-, from Latin baucalus, from Koine Greek βαύκαλις (baúkalis, container used for the cooling of wine); probably of Central Atlas Tamazight[3] or Egyptian origin.[4]
