Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally analyzed as *πεδ-ϝλῡ-τρα (*ped-wlū-tra), a compound of πούς (poús, foot) +‎ ἔλυτρον (élutron, covering). Nevertheless, monosyllabic ϝλυ- and its length are surprising.
