[edit]Learnedly, from Ancient Greek σεσημᾰσμένος (sesēmasménos). Formal perfect participle of σημαίνομαι (simaínomai), passive voice of σημαίνω (simaíno, “signify”). It retains the ancient reduplication σε-σ...-. Semantic loan from French marqué.[1]
