From Proto-Turkic *bodog (paint, dye), derived from Proto-Turkic *boda- (to paint, dye) (see боё (boyo)). Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (boduɣ, dye), Karakhanid [script needed] (boδoɣ, dye), Bashkir буяу (buyaw), Kazakh бояу (boäu), Turkish boya.
