From Proto-Khanty *köčǝɣ, from Proto-Uralic *kečɜ. Cognates include Northern Mansi касай (kasaj), Hungarian kés and Eastern Mari кӱзӧ (küzö).

Khanty cognates include Eastern Khanty кӧҷәӽ (köč̣əḥ).
