Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ostrъgy (v-stem), equivalent to остържа (ostǎrža, to file off) +‎ -ва (-va). Called so because loom's beams need to be carefully smoothen with a file in order to fit within the overall frame.
