[edit]From Middle High German jesen, from Old High German jesan, from Proto-Germanic *jesaną. Internal ־ר־ (-r-) possibly from the causative Old High German jerien (“to make ferment”), from Proto-Germanic *jazjaną. Compare German gären, which see for more.
