Etymology

From Middle Persian slwtn' (srūdan, to sing, recite, play), from Proto-Iranian *crāwáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćrāwáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlow-éye-ti, causative from *ḱlew- (to hear). Compare Northern Kurdish stirîn (to sing), stran (song).
