[edit]From Middle Persian slwtn' (srūdan, “to sing, recite, play”), from Proto-Iranian *crāwáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćrāwáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlow-éye-ti, causative from *ḱlew- (“to hear”). Compare Northern Kurdish stirîn (“to sing”), stran (“song”).
