Gulf Arabic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

عطى (ʕaṭa, to give) + عمر (ʕumur, age, life).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ʕətˤaːk ʕʊmrə/

Verb[edit]

عطاك عمره (ʿaṭāk ʿumra)

  1. (idiomatic, euphemistic) used to report someone has passed away.
    Synonyms: توفى (tawaffa), مات (māt)

Usage notes[edit]

The verb (عطى) must be conjugated and a pronominal suffix must be attached to its object (عمر) to reflect the gender and number of the person(s) who passed away and the person(s) being spoken to. For example, if a female had died and the news is being told to a male, the correct form would be عطتك عمرها (ʕaṭitik ʕumurha, literally she gave you (m) her age).
