Inherited from Sanskrit प्रणक (praṇaka, “the inspissated juice of the sugar cane and other plants”). Cognate to Sinhalese පැණි (pæṇi, “sweet juice, syrup, honey, molasses”). Doublet of ފަނި (fani)
