Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian محله (mahalla), from Arabic مَحَلَّة (maḥalla), which is from the verb حَلَّ (ḥalla, to untie), as in untying a pack horse or camel to make camp. Doublet of মহলা (mohola).
