Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (akkhi), from Sanskrit अक्षि (akṣi), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hákṣi, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hákši, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ókʷs (“eye”). Doublet of અક્ષિ (akṣi) and આઈ (āī). Cognate with Bengali আঁখ (ãkh), Hindi आँख (ā̃kh), Kashmiri أچھ (ạch), Lomavren ախի (axi), Kalasha eč, Nepali आँखा (ā̃khā), Odia ଆଖି (ākhi), Punjabi ਅੱਖ (akkha), Romani jakh, and Sinhalese ඇස (æsa). Wider cognates include English eye.
