[edit]First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄒᆡᆫᄡᆞᆯ (Yale: hoyn.psol). From 흰 (huin, “white”), adnominal form of 희다 (huida), + 쌀 (ssal, “rice”).
