From Proto-Germanic *ijj-, a suppletive past tense form to Proto-Germanic *gฤnฤ… (โ€œto goโ€), and further from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚ey- (โ€œgoโ€). Cognate with Old English eode (โ€œwentโ€), Latin eล (โ€œgoโ€), Russian ะธะดั‚ะธ (idti, โ€œgoโ€).
