From Proto-Germanic *þeudō, from Proto-Indo-European *tewtéh₂. Cognate with Old Saxon thiod, Old High German diota (German deutsch), Old Norse þióð, Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰. The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Old Irish túath ‘people’, Lithuanian tautà ‘people’.
