From Germanic *þeuđō, from Indo-European *teuˈtā- (teu'teh2- using the laryngeal hypothesis). Cognate with Old Saxon thiod, Old High German diota (German deutsch), Old Norse þióð. The PIE root is also the source of Old Irish túath ‘people’, Lithuanian tautà ‘people’.
