From Germanic *þeuđō, from Indo-European *teuˈtā-. Cognate with Old Saxon thiod, Old High German diota (German deutsch), Old Norse þióð. The PIE root is also the source of Old Irish túath ‘people’, Lithuanian tautà ‘people’.
