Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *āž-, from Proto-Indo-European *āǵ-, *h₂e(i)ǵ- (goat). Cognates include Lithuanian ožỹs, Old Prussian wosux ([vōzuks]), Proto-Slavic *azь (Russian язь (jaz’) “ide (fish)” < “goat”), Sanskrit अजः (ajáḥ), Albanian dhi (< *a-dhi), Old Armenian այծ (ayc).[1]
