Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *arśəms, possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *arwa (“price, value”); compare Finnish arvo (“value”), arvata (“to guess”), Estonian aru (“reason”), arvama (“to believe, assume, think”), Hungarian ár (“price”). Ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hargʰás (“price, worth, value”), whence Sanskrit अर्घ (argha, “worth, value”).
