Derived from the same root as кипі́ти (kypíty, to boil), from Proto-Slavic *kypě̀ti, from Proto-Indo-European *kwep-, whence English covet and hope. Compare Russian кипяти́ть (kipjatítʹ), Belarusian кіпяці́ць (kipjacícʹ).
