Etymology[edit]

From Iranian *barz. Compare Avestan 𐬠𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬱 (barəziš, cushion, cover), Ossetian баз (baz, pillow), Persian بالش (bâleš, pillow), Sanskrit बर्हिस् (barhis, seat for gods and sacrificers during sacrifice ceremony).

The later senses developed from the original meaning of "pillow".
