From Proto-Indo-European *teh₂- (to melt), whence also թանալ (tʿanal) and թան (tʿan). Cognates include Ancient Greek τήκω (tḗkō), Sanskrit तोयम् (toyam), Latin tabeo and Old English þawian (English thaw).
