Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱóyno-; cognate with Old Church Slavonic сѣно (sěno) and Ancient Greek κοινά (koiná).

Alternatively, a Northeast Caucasian borrowing: compare Archi гьоти (grass), Andi кӏордо (grass), Rutul хьытӏ (barley), Tsakhur хьытӏа (barley), Udi ход (tree), Avar гъветӏ (ġweṭ, tree). Note also Georgian ხე (xe, tree).
