From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm (“‘egg’”). Cognates include Ancient Greek ᾠόν (ōión), Latin ovum, Old Church Slavonic аицє (aice) (Russian яйцо), Persian خایه (xāya) and Old English ǣġ (English egg).
