From Proto-Indo-European *mel- (“‘honey’”) which also gave մեղու (mełu), “‘bee’”). Cognates include Ancient Greek μέλι (meli), “‘honey’”), μέλισσα (melissa), “‘bee’”), Latin mel (“‘honey’”), Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌹𐌸 (miliþ), “‘honey’”), Irish mil (“‘honey’”), Albanian mjaltë (“‘honey’”). The u-stem (genitive մեղու (mełu)), which has no parallels in other languages, developed under the influence of *մեդու (medu), “‘honey’”), derived from the other PIE word for “honey”, *médʰu (“‘honey; mead’”).
