[edit] Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *mel- (honey) which also gave մեղու (mełu), bee). Cognates include Ancient Greek μέλι (meli), honey), μέλισσα (melissa), bee), Latin mel (honey), Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌻𐌹𐌸 (miliþ), honey), Irish mil (honey), Albanian mjaltë (honey). The u-stem (genitive մեղու (mełu)), which has no parallels in other languages, developed under the influence of *մեդու (medu), honey), derived from the other PIE word for “honey”, *médʰu (honey; mead).
