An Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian šnwhl (šnōhr, gratitude, contentment), Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫙𐫢𐫗𐫇𐫍𐫡 (ʿšnwhr /⁠išnōhr⁠/, grace; gratitude), Manichaean Parthian 𐫙𐫢𐫗𐫇𐫍𐫡 (ʿšnwhr /⁠išnōhr⁠/, grace; gratitude), Avestan 𐬑𐬴𐬥𐬀𐬊𐬚𐬭𐬀 (xṣ̌naoθra, satisfaction).
