Etymology[edit]

By specialization from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾwlwl), 𐫀𐫇𐫡𐫇𐫡 (ʾwrwr /urwar/, plant, crop, vegetable), from Proto-Iranian *Hr̥HwáraH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥HwáraH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂r̥h₃-wé-reh₂ (fertile land) from *h₂erh₃- (to plough). Compare dialectal Persian الور (olvar, legume). Otherwise borrowed from one of the Aramaic ancestors of Arabic خُلَّر (ḵullar), see it.
