Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (glwʾkn' /⁠grawgān⁠/), 𐫃𐫡𐫇𐫃𐫀𐫗 (grwgʾn /⁠grawgān⁠/, pledge, security). By surface analysis, گرو (gerow) +‎ ـگان (gân).
