Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀻 (pupphī), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀨𑀼𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀻 (*phupphī, father's sister).[1]
