Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *sel- (“to spring, jump”).
Cognate with Ancient Greek ἅλλομαι (hállomai, “to jump”), ἁλτῆρες (haltêres) giving English haltere; Latin saliō (“jump”) whence English (somer)sault.
Not to be confused with स्रु (sru, “to flow, leak”) from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“to flow, stream”).
