Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *sel- (to spring, jump).

Cognate with Ancient Greek ἅλλομαι (hállomai, to jump), ἁλτῆρες (haltêres) giving English haltere; Latin saliō (jump) whence English (somer)sault.

Not to be confused with स्रु (sru, to flow, leak) from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (to flow, stream).
