Etymology[edit]
From Pali janapada (“state; country; territory”, literally “foothold of men”), from jana (“men; people; etc”) + pada (“foot, footprint, footstep; post, position; etc”); or from Sanskrit जनपद (janapada, idem), from जन (jana, idem) + पद (pada, idem); equivalent to Thai ชน (chon) + บท (bòt). Cognate with Khmer ជានបទ (chéanbât).
