Etymology[edit]
From ชื่อ (chʉ̂ʉ, “name”) + สกุล (sà-gun, “family”); calque of English family name; probably first used on 22 March 2455 BE (1913 CE), when the Law on Designation of Family Names, 2456 Buddhist Era (พระราชบัญญัติขนานนามสกุล พระพุทธศักราช ๒๔๕๖) was promulgated.

Usage notes[edit]
“ชื่อสกุล” is avoided to used since it is the homonym of “ชื่อ-สกุล” meaning the full name, both first name and last name.
