From Proto-Tai *ʰmaːkᴰ (fruit). Cognate with Lao ໝາກ (māk), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩣ᩠ᨠ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨾᩣ᩠ᨠ, ᦖᦱᧅ (ṁaak), Shan မၢၵ်ႇ (màak), Ahom 𑜉𑜀𑜫 (mak), Zhuang mak, Tày mác. Compare Proto-Be *maːkᴰ².
