Borrowed from Middle Khmer ពិតាន (bitāna), ពីតាន (bītāna), ពិយតាន (biyatāna), ពីយតាន (bīyatāna), ពិទារ (bidāra), ព្ភិតាន (bbhitāna), ភីត្តាន (bhīttāna), វិតាណ (phtāna), វិតាន (vitāṇa, protective cloth covering mounted on poles above a sacred person or object: canopy, awning), from Angkorian Old Khmer vitāna (ibid.), from Pali vitāna (canopy; awning) or Sanskrit वितान (vitāna, spreading out; expansion; extension; awning; canopy; etc). Cognate with Modern Khmer ពិតាន (pitaan, ceiling; canopy), Lao ເພດານ (phē dān), ພິດານ (phi dān).
