From แผ่น (pɛ̀n, sheet) +‎ ดิน (din, earth), literally sheet of earth, possibly reflecting the Flat Earth belief. Compare Lao ແຜ່ນດິນ (phǣn din), ᦶᦕᧃᧈᦡᦲᧃ (ṗhaen¹ḋiin), Tai Dam ꪵꪠ꪿ꪙ ꪒꪲꪙ.
